El alcalde gobernador y jefe de Gobierno del Estado Federal de Berlín estuvo en Quito por invitación oficial de Rafael Correa, Presidente de la República de Ecuador. La Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Ecuador FES-ILDIS, en conjunto con la Embajada de Alemania y el Municipio del Distrito Metropolitano de Quito, organizaron una conferencia magistral el día jueves 3 de abril 2014 en el Centro de Convenciones Eugenio Espejo. La conferencia recibió a más de 200 personas, entre ellas el ex presidente Rodrigo Borja.
Primero, Ronald Münch, Consejero de la Misión Adjunto de la Embajada de Alemania en Ecuador, Anja Minnaert, Directora de FES-ILDIS Ecuador y el Vice-Alcalde de Quito, Jorge Albán Gómez, destacaron la visita del Alcalde. Después, Wowereit habló en la Conferencia Magistral sobre “Berlín – 25 años desde la caída del Muro”. El funcionario del partido socialdemócrata alemán explicó importantes hitos en la historia de Berlín y Alemania desde la construcción del muro hasta su caída y posterior reunificación alemana en 1989. Subrayó el desarrollo de Berlín que pasó de ser una ciudad dividida hacia una ciudad que “no está en competencia con otras ciudades alemanas, sino con las metrópolis del mundo”. También habló de la relación entre Alemania y Ecuador, así como sus ciudades capitales y el potencial de estos lazos. “Las buenas ideas deben ser copiadas. Es importante, aprender unos de otros”, comentó Wowereit. También entregó sus felicitaciones a FES-ILDIS a propósito de su jubileo: “40 años son un aniversario destacable”, dijo Klaus Wowereit.
